Man Identified as ICU Nurse Fatally Shot by Federal Agents in Minneapolis

A 37-year-old Minneapolis resident has been identified as the man shot and killed by federal law enforcement officers during an immigration enforcement operation earlier this week. Family members and colleagues say Alex Jeffrey Pretti worked as an intensive care nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital and was known for his dedication to patient care and community service.

According to authorities, federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security were conducting an operation in south Minneapolis when Pretti was fatally shot on the morning of January 24, 2026. Local police confirmed Pretti had a permit to carry a concealed firearm and no significant criminal history prior to the incident.

Conflicting Accounts and Ongoing Investigation

Officials with the Department of Homeland Security say Pretti approached agents while armed and resisted attempts to disarm him. Public video footage from bystanders shows Pretti holding a phone at the time, and local police have noted footage supports parts of the official account without providing full context.

Pretti’s family and colleagues have disputed some aspects of the federal narrative, describing him as compassionate and committed to helping others. The police chief has urged that clarity will come through a transparent investigation, and demonstrations have taken place in parts of Minneapolis as residents seek answers and accountability.

Community Response and Calls for Examination

In the wake of the shooting, community members have expressed concern and urged a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death. Officials from various organizations have called for calm and patience as authorities gather evidence and address public questions.
